VNU and CIAT: Cooperation in high-tech Agriculture

On January 22, VNU's President Nguyen Kim Son and General Director of International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Ruben Echeverria signed a cooperation agreement between the two sides. In particular, the University of Technology also signed a cooperation agreement with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture that cooperates in the field of high-tech agriculture.
Presence in the ceremony, Mr. Dindo Campilan who Director of Asia present on the CIAT side, Mr. Nguyen Van Bo, Former President of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Vietnam, and experts and CIAT's staffs.
On VNU side, there were representatives of leadership from the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha, Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chu Duc Trinh, Vice-Rector, and Dr. Pham Minh Trien, Deputy Head of Technology Science, and Development Cooperation Department who represents the UET.

Whereby, these two organizations will develop cooperation related to the application of geospatial and remote sensing for agriculture and the environment; Applied Digital in agriculture and related to information communication technologies; Microbiological biotechnology and biological treatment systems in the agricultural industries; Resource management and seed systems support agricultural product that has high-quality; Sustainable development and climate change.
At the meeting, VNU's President Nguyen Kim Son said that the agricultural sector plays a core role and the development of high-tech agriculture related to sustainable development should focus on the top priority field in Vietnam. According to that, VNU established the Faculty of Agricultural Technology that under the UET aims to educate undergraduate and graduate. Thereby, it supports human resources that have a high quality and high level. It studies and increases the application of advanced science and technology in the agricultural field. It contributes to the development of modern agriculture, produces the numbers of large goods with high productivity, quality, efficiency, and competitiveness. Therefore, it strongly contributes to the enhancement of knowledge and development of the country's economy in the trend of the new industrial revolution.

Besides, VNU's President Nguyen Kim Son said that VNU has the advantage of a team of leading scientists who have been participating in many projects related to technology development in agriculture. VNU wishes to establish a cooperative relationship with CIAT that implements projects in fields education including training and development of human resources in overall research goals. VNU always supports and helps the University of Engineering and Technology, VNU implements to process of cooperating with CIAT that are quickly and effectively.
Mr. Dindo Campilan, Director of CIAT's Asian Regional, and Mr. Viet Ha Nguyen, Rector of the University of Engineering and Technology, VNU signed the cooperation agreement.
Mr. Ruben Echeverria, General Director of CIAT expressed his impression of VNU's achievements in fields of training and researching, he believes that this partnership would contribute great benefits to both sides.
He presented that CIAT is carrying out activities related to poverty reduction and improved nutrition for people in the tropics through research in agriculture and the environment. He expected the scientists and experts of VNU who will coordinate, share, and join scientists of CIAT in research projects and activities related to sustainable agriculture, applied digitally in agriculture, land management, and climate change.
The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is a part of The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), a global association that combines with organizations to join research for safety future in foods.
CIAT implements activities related to poverty reduction and improvement of nutrition for people in the tropics areas through research in the agriculture field and the environment.
CIAT focuses on researches that increase the yield of key tropical crops, upsetting soil degradation, and using the information to make better decisions on issues of climate change and environmental management. CIAT cooperates with research organizations and groups that collaborate, aims to increase capacities, and build knowledge networks in Asia on technology application in agriculture. CIAT studies to identify approaches to enhance sustainability, increase livelihoods, and environmental benefits of forage systems. CIAT's scientists who are studying the influence of climate change on livestock production systems in tropical areas. In addition, CIAT identifies strategies for large-scale intensification, livestock production systems are friendly more with climate, using resources more efficiently and sustainably in terms of economics and ecological environment
Currently, CIAT has implemented about 50 projects and activities in Vietnam.
